Hi everybody! Welcome to Thee House Of Joy. I am so glad to share this experience with you.
I was born in Brooklyn New York and have been a performer since the day I was born. My mother Raquel Hidalgo was also a performer, a political activist and above all a humanitarian. She was an extraordinary singer and had great success in the Latino community. She was the President of the Puerto Rican Women's Association of America, President of The Needy Children of New York City and was on the committee of the Puerto Rican Day Parade for many years. She worked on political campaigns for Shirley Chisholm, the first black female to run for President of the United States. In addition, she was always on the forefront of causes for women of color. She was personally asked by Bella Abzug to accompany her to the White House for several rallies. Needless to say, the apple does not fall far from the tree.
After graduating from the performing arts division of Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn New York, I went on to New York University. I was then offered a scholarship at the Alvin Ailey American School of Dance. That's when my juices really began to flow in the world of performing and my desire to change the world, one heart at a time.
During a break while I was on scholarship, I landed the role of Bernardo in a regional production of West Side Story and I was hooked. Not only did I discover my singing voice, my acting chops and my passion for musical theater, but it was way more fun for me and the pay was a little bit better too. LMFAO!
I immersed myself 100% into musical theater and studied vigorously. I have had the honor and great fortune to star or be featured in several Broadway productions from New York City to London and around the world. My musical theater passion blossomed into a dream I never thought possible and it has allowed me to see the world doing what I love most. My first Broadway production was Cats, then it was on to Starlight Express. I also originated the role of Joe Vegas in Fame: The Musical and then on to West Side Story as Bernardo, Paul in A Chorus Line, Desi Arnaz in Mambo Kings, the Governor's Aide in Candide, Bob Crewe in Jersey Boys, the Viper in Ain't Misbehavin' and ultimately my life changing experience and most treasured production; the role of Molina opposite the iconic and legendary Chita Rivera in Kiss Of The Spider Woman.
I've appeared in television and film including Law & Order CI, As The World Turns, Love By The 10th Date, directed by Nzinga Stewart for Lifetime Television and To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything Julie Newmar for Steven Spielberg on the big screen, featured as the role of Chita opposite Wesley Snipes.
You will notice all that is listed above are male roles. Well there's a reason. I am a transgender woman and obviously my life is now unfolding in ways I've never dreamed of. I am the hostess of an international podcast that has now been renamed Thee House Of Joy. I live in Los Angeles California.
My name is Joy Hidalgo and I am honored to meet you. I am currently working on a new project entitled My Joyful Journey. I hope you come with me as this journey unfolds. Stay in touch and stay connected to love. My motto in life? That's an easy one........
